For traits that are difficult to measure phenotypically marker-assisted selection will be very useful. Physical and genetic map of the genome are currently being developed in order to help identify markers or genes linked to important economic traits. Such markers will be integrated in the breeding program in order to produce genetically improved catfish lines.  In parallel, for traits such as increase resistance to disease, genes are selected based on comparison with other animal species and evaluated to determine their role and potential as markers in catfish.
