Hoekstra Announces West Michigan to Receive $723,100 for Emergency Food & Shelter

Benzie, Lake, Manistee, Kent, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Wexford, Mason Among Funded Counties

Washington, Dec 9 -

U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland, announced on Tuesday that seven West Michigan counties will receive $723,100 under the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Emergency Food and Shelter (EFS) Program.

“As we are now into the winter season, emergency food and shelter funding could not come at a better time,” Hoekstra said. “West Michigan counties will receive assistance from a program that has been around since 1983 and has provided millions of additional meals and nights of shelter to those most in need of help.”

The counties funded are as follows:

Benzie County -- $11,991
Kent -- $416,211
Lake County -- $6,809
Manistee County -- $17,024
Mason -- $34,658
Muskegon -- $150,660
Newaygo -- $37,637
Oceana -- $24,647
Wexford -- $23,463

The EFS National Board – chaired by the Department of Homeland Security’s FEMA and composed of representatives from the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and United Way of America among other social service organizations – provides supplemental funding to shelters, soup kitchens, food banks and rent, mortgage and utility assistance programs.

A Local Board advertises the availability of funds, establishes local priorities, selects local non-profit and government agencies to receive supplemental funding and monitors program compliance.
