VIP Authentication Services

Trusted and Convenient Log-In and Transactions

VeriSign® Identity Protection logo

As consumers store information and transact business online, they demand both easy and secure access from the companies they trust with their finances, health care, entertainment, and more. VeriSign® Identity Protection (VIP) Authentication Services enable strong authentication (two factor authentication) with the most recognized trust brand on the Internet.

How VIP Authentication Services Works

Strong authentication, also called two-factor authentication, combines something you know (such as a username and password) with something you have (a credential such as a smart card, token, or mobile phone). VIP Authentication Services provides the validation for "something you have."

VIP Validation Infrastructure displaying two factor authentication

The consumer’s identity and transaction information stays within your system; only the security code passes anonymously to VeriSign for validation. The consumer experiences a fast response and a more secure connection. You can add a two-factor authentication option to your consumer network without a costly infrastructure investment.

Easy to Use

Consumers have different behaviors and preferences when it comes to their individual online experiences. VIP Authentication Services lets you support a range of OATH-compliant credential form factors. Compare Two-Factor Authentication Credentials including credit card sized credentials and tokens. Also, check out our latest credential that runs on consumers' mobile phones. With all the options we offer, you can select the credentials that will be most convenient for your customers and the most cost-effective for your business.

The VIP Network Effect

Instead of using a different credential for each online account, consumers can carry one credential for secure access to any Web site that displays the VIP logo. By joining the VIP Network, your organization becomes a VIP Member (one that accepts the VIP Credential). This mutually beneficial trust network provides convenience with greater security to consumers.

VIP Developer Test Drive

VeriSign is providing the VIP Authentication APIs, which are based on Simple Object Access Protocol Web Services, to help you integrate your online applications with the VIP Authentication Service. Integrating your online applications with the VIP Authentication Service is extremely simple; once the user inputs in the security code following successful username/password verification, the VIP Authentication Service validates the unique security code inputted by the user. The VIP Test Drive for Developers gives developers access to the APIs that are being used in real-world deployments, but in a pilot environment. The pilot accounts are shared with other pilot accounts to simulate the advantages of shared authentication in a network. OTP or security codes are generated via software tokens.

NEW! VIP Mobile Developer Test Drive

By leveraging the VIP Access for Mobile SDKs, developers can transform mobile devices into two-factor authentication credentials capable of generating a new one-time password (OTP) with every sign-on.   Developers can download the trial VIP Access for Mobile SDKs (J2ME and iPhone), as well as sample code, documents and applications to test integration with VIP Authentication Service after completing a simple click-through evaluation agreement. The tools cover such vital areas as application design, provisioning and validation. Pilot participants can work with the SDKs to test how the VIP Authentication Service integrates and operates with their mobile applications.

We've had VeriSign VIP Authentication running for over a year, and we've seen a reduction in account takeovers for both eBay and PayPal. In addition, many customers told us that the added layer of protection made them feel more secure when they were buying and selling online.
