Spring Floods
What you need to know
Prepare your home and family
- Make sure your flood insurance policy is current. If you don't have a policy, talk to your insurance agent about protecting your home and property. Flood insurance is available to anyone living in a participating community, either if you aren't in a floodplain. Flood insurance is your best defense against flooding.
- If your home has a basement, move any important documents or personal property to a higher level if possible. If you have a sump pump, be sure it is in working order.
- Put together a family emergency kit with items such as bottled water, food and needed medical supplies. You should also gather important documents and have some cash on hand. Your kit should also be portable in case you are forced to evacuate.
