Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) released the following statement regarding the nonprofit Buckeye Institute’s report, “The Economic Impact of Federal Spending on State Economic Performance: An Ohio Perspective,” showing Ohio’s job losses from the so-called federal “stimulus” bill, which Boehner opposed, could be as high as 91,200:

“The Buckeye Institute and the Congressional Budget Office have both come to similar conclusions: the so-called ‘stimulus’ spending bill enacted earlier this year is likely to do more harm than good to our state and our nation over the long haul.  Ohio’s unemployment rate is a staggering 9.7 percent, and working families anxiously face every day wondering if this is one on which they will lose their job.  The flawed ‘stimulus’ bill has not only piled hundreds of billions of dollars in added debt on our children, but also may end up destroying tens of thousands of Ohio jobs.

“Instead of putting taxpayer funds at risk and putting jobs in jeopardy, I and other House Republicans are advocating better solutions that will create jobs and lower taxes, including legislation that would have created 246,000 jobs in Ohio by the end of 2010.  Congress needs to stop wasting taxpayers’ hard-earned money and start letting families and small businesses keep more of what they earn.  That’s what a true ‘stimulus’ bill will do, and Washington hasn’t done it.”

Boehner represents Ohio’s 8th District, which includes all of Darke, Miami and Preble counties, most of Butler and Mercer counties, and the northeastern corner of Montgomery County.  He was first elected to Congress in 1990.
