Washington, Mar 4 -

Fire departments in Randolph and Rowan counties will soon be able to purchase updated equipment and training programs thanks to federal grants announced today by U.S. Rep. Howard Coble (R-NC).  Congressman Coble said that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has approved grants for the Franklinville Fire Department in Randolph and the Rockwell Rural Volunteer Fire Department in Rowan.

Rep. Coble said the federal funds come from the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants program.  “These grants allow our first responders to enhance their abilities to protect the health and safety of our communities,” Rep. Coble stated.  “I am pleased that so many fire departments in the 6th District have participated in this worthwhile federal program.”

The Rockwell Rural Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded $53,476 according to Rep. Coble.  Rockwell will use the funds to purchase new turnout gear cleaning equipment along with installing a new ventilation system in the fire station.  Congressman Coble said that Franklinville will receive $59,512 to purchase four new sets of turnout gear, a new computer-based training program, along with new equipment to fill firefighters’ air packs.

Congressman Coble said these two awards were the latest to be given to 6th District fire departments.  In the last few weeks, additional fire departments have received Homeland Security grants, as well.  Over the last few weeks, grants have been awarded to the following:

·        Alamance Community Fire District in Greensboro received $46,075

·        Mount Hope Community Fire Department in Julian received $40,375

·        Locke Township Fire Department in Salisbury received $31,137

·        Farmer Volunteer Fire Department in Denton received $43,890

In addition, Rep. Coble said that another fire department in the 6th District will receive federal funds through a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant.  Congressman Coble said that the West Lexington Volunteer Fire Department will receive $105,300 from the FEMA program known as SAFER, which stands for Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response.
