RICHARD DOYLE TO HEAD JPL'S INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES
Dr. Richard Doyle has been named manager of the Information
Technologies and Software Systems Division at NASA's Jet
Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA. He replaces Chris Carl, who
has retired.
Doyle, 40, was previously manager of the Information and
Computing Technologies Research Section and assistant manager for
the Autonomy Technology Program at JPL. He served as supervisor
of the Artificial Intelligence Group at JPL from 1989 to 1995.
In 1993-94, he spent six months as a visiting scientist in the
Mission Operations Directorate at NASA's Johnson Space Center,
Houston, TX.
He was U.S. program chair for the International Symposium on
Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Automation for Space, held
in Tokyo in July 1997 and will serve in this role again at
Noƶrdvijk, The Netherlands in June 1999. In July 1997, he spoke
on the topic of "The Emergence of Spacecraft Autonomy" as an
invited speaker at the National Conference on Artificial
Intelligence in Providence, RI .
Doyle received his doctorate in computer science at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Artificial Intelligence
Laboratory in 1988, his master's degree in electrical engineering
and computer science from MIT in 1984, and a bachelor's degree in
mathematics, summa cum laude, with a minor in astronomy, from
Boston University in 1980. He originally worked at JPL from
July 1980 to December 1991 as an analyst and programmer in the
Navigation Systems Section. While earning advanced degrees, he
returned to JPL during summers to work in the Artificial
Intelligence Group.
Doyle was born in Middletown, CT and now resides in La
Crescenta, CA.
