Clyburn Demands Accountability on Iraq Supplemental Request

WASHINGTON, DC— House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn released the following statement today in response to President Bush’s request for an additional $42.3 billion to fund the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, bringing his total request to $189.3 billion.

“Only a few days after working to defeat a fiscally responsible bill that would have provided vital health coverage to 10 million needy children, the President has asked Congress to appropriate nearly $200 billion to continue funding his failing war policies.  Rather than working with Congress to pass a children’s health care bill that pays for itself, the President prefers to recklessly add billions of dollars to our nation’s soaring debt for a war with no end.

“The President began this war with no exit strategy and still has no plan to redeploy our troops.  Our military is mired in the midst of a civil war, with a corrupt government that refuses to make political progress and take control of its future.

“It is time that this President learn that appropriations require accountability.  If this President wants more money, then he needs to start producing more positive results.”
