Washington, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today joined House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller, and Congressman Kendrick Meek to unveil a Progress Report for Young Americans. The lawmakers made the announcement at Howard University where they had a discussion with students about issues that impact their access to an affordable education.  The report outlines the legislative accomplishments that the Democratic-led Congress has made on behalf of America’s youth in the 110th Congress.  (Click to access the report)  Clyburn released the following statement.

“For several decades, Howard University has served as one of our nation’s leading institutions of higher learning and as one of America’s finest Historically Black Universities.  In recognizing the tremendous contributions that Historically Black College and University (HBCU) graduates have made to our society, I have worked with my Democratic colleagues in passing legislation that upgrade facilities, maintain historic landmarks, and increase federal aid to minority-serving institutions.

“Democrats understand that America’s role as a world-power and leader in social, cultural, and technological advances can only be maintained by investing in the future of our nation’s youth.  The Democratic-led Congress has established a new direction towards securing a better and brighter tomorrow for our children and grandchildren.

“The historic legislative accomplishments of Congressional Democrats this year speak volumes to our commitment in ensuring that our nation’s scholars and future leaders are provided with the resources they need to excel.  By passing legislation that serves as the single largest investment in college aid since the GI Bill and in pushing through the first increase to the federal minimum wage in 10 years, Democrats are making progress on behalf of our nation’s youth.  Democrats have also spearheaded many other initiatives that create comprehensive reforms designated to protect our environment, secure our ports, and expand healthcare coverage.

“The House Democratic Leadership realizes that our nation’s ongoing successes depend on the readiness and acumen of our youth.  Therefore, Democrats will continue to work towards preparing and providing our future generations with tools for achievement.”
