WASHINGTON, DC—House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today commented on passage of a revised emergency Iraq spending bill, HR 2206, which also includes funding for veterans care and hurricane recovery.
“The House spoke clearly tonight in favor ending the president’s blank check for war and demanding accountability from the administration and the Iraqi government, based on benchmarks the president himself established.
“This revised legislation provides funding to meet the immediate needs of our troops and requires the president to deliver a report on the progress of those benchmarks. Following the report, the Congress will vote to release the remaining funds.
“Furthermore this legislation includes critical funding for domestic needs here at home—children’s health care, hurricane Katrina recovery resources, and veterans care. Our fellow Americans are facing serious emergencies and we are morally obligated to meet their needs. I’m disappointed the president considers this funding pork.
“We continue to reach out a hand to the administration to work toward compromise on this legislation, but the president prefers confrontation. I look forward to a day where the House, Senate and White House can join in a conference meeting to craft legislation to forge a new direction in Iraq.”
