WASHINGTON, DC— In celebration of the 56th Annual National Prayer Day, Congressman James E. Clyburn (D-SC), House Majority Whip and Chair of the Democratic Faith Working Group, released the following statement:

“Today’s National Day of Prayer provides our nation and its diverse communities the opportunity to stand still, to reflect, and to be mindful of our spiritual obligations as persons of faith. It matters not whether we are Democrat or Republican, black or white, yellow or brown, Jew or Christian, or Sunni or Shiite. Despite our differences, we are all ‘caught in an inescapable network of mutuality.’

“As a lawmaker and as a person of faith, I understand the redeeming power of prayer. It is through this process I remember my own spiritual obligations. The book of Micah says ‘What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?’

“Justice, compassion, and humility are moral imperatives, which must be weaved into the fabric of all the policies that are crafted by legislators. We must protect the poor and disenfranchised. We must give comfort to the windows and the orphans. We must have the courage to communicate and to reconcile with those whom we disagree.

“On this National Day of Prayer, may we all remember the words of Micah and we reflect on our on promises to God.”
