WASHINGTON, DC—Below are remarks from House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn following a bipartisan bicameral meeting at the White House on a pending emergency spending bill.
“Today’s meeting was positive. I’m pleased the president finally indicated that he is willing to work with the Congress on compromise legislation regarding funding for the war in Iraq. We must move past political posturing and craft a bill that can become law. The American people want results, and that’s what we intend to deliver.
“But we must be clear that any legislation must indicate an end to the open-ended commitment for this war and hold the Iraqi government accountable for running their country. In addition, I believe that many Americans in this country are suffering and we must address their emergency needs in this legislation. Our brothers and sisters in the Gulf Coast region, children who have run out of health care in fourteen states and our veterans who are struggling with inadequate hospital systems like Walter Reed, for example need urgent assistance. We must include funding for these critical needs in the next bill the Congress sends the president.”
