Secure Communities

Phased Implementation

The Secure Communities strategy is designed to accurately and efficiently identify criminal aliens; to prioritize them based on the severity of their crimes; and to help transform the systems and processes necessary to remove them from the United States.

To accomplish this, Secure Communities is using biometric identification technologies currently in use by the FBI and other parts of DHS, and combining them in a new, powerful way. Secure Communities is currently deploying across the nation to many jurisdictions, beginning by focusing on sites that represent the highest concentrations of the most dangerous criminal aliens. We are exploring ways to responsibly accelerate the development and expansion of Secure Communities over the next three years.

Recent Secure Communities Statistics

As of April 15, 2009, Secure Communities is now available in 48 sites in 7 States and services more than 2,100 booking locations. This current configuration will produce approximately 1,104,840 annual fingerprint submissions.  Each month, Secure Communities will deploy to more sites, eventually producing millions of annual fingerprint submissions.

During Q1 FY 2009, 5,707 biometric identification submissions resulted in an IDENT match. Of these, 124 were violent or narcotic offenders. As a result of the Secure Communities program, ICE issued 955 detainers after identifying criminal aliens that would have otherwise remained undetected.
