WASHINGTON, DC—House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn released the following statement today congratulating Congressman John Dingell (D-MI) as the longest serving member of the House of Representatives.
“I offer my most sincere congratulations to John Dingell, as he becomes the longest serving Member of the House of Representatives today. He is one of the most influential and capable Members to ever serve in this institution. John’s is a powerful moral voice for health care for all Americans, community development and the concerns of everyday working people.
“John was an early and strong supporter of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which at the time, were not very popular in parts of suburban Detroit that he represents. Those votes very nearly cost him his seat in Congress. Yet he stood on principle, courage and integrity, and on the right side of history at a crucial time for America.
“John is a giant of the Congress, a legislator’s legislator, a trusted friend, mentor and colleague. I thank him for his service, leadership and friendship. Congratulations John and Deborah, for reaching this incredible milestone. I look forward to continuing to serve with Congressman Dingell for many years to come.”
