FOLSOM, PA—With extraordinary challenges facing Veterans, military personnel, and their families, Congressman Joe Sestak (PA-07) brought together 50 organizations and leading local and national Veterans leaders for his third 7th Congressional District Veterans Summit, “2009, The Year of the Military Family.”  A crowd of more than 500 Veterans, Service Members, and military family members and their friends attended the event on May 11, 2009, at Ridley High School in Folsom, Pa. Congressman Sestak Comments on FAA Airspace Redesign Hearing

Troop 144 Honors Newest Eagle Scouts

Congressman Sestak attends Westtown School ‘Plugging-in’ Ceremony

WESTTOWN, PA—Congressman Joe Sestak (PA-07) spoke at a “plugging-in” ceremony for a new solar panel installation at the Westtown School. The panels, funded in part by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Energy Harvest program, will offset the school’s electricity costs by as much as $10,000 annually and will be used as an educational and research opportunity for the school.  »

Congressman Sestak Votes for Mortgage Reform and Consumer Protection Measure

WASHINGTON, DC—On May 7, 2009, Congressman Joe Sestak (PA-07) voted for H.R. 1728, the Mortgage Reform and Anti-Predatory Lending Act of 2009, which the House passed by a vote of 300 to 114. The measure is aimed at curbing “predatory” lending – a major factor in the nation’s highest home foreclosure rate in 25 years.  The bill would outlaw many of the industry practices that have contributed to the subprime lending boom, and it would prevent borrowers from deliberately misstating their income to qualify for a loan. The bill would ensure that mortgage lenders make loans that benefit the consumer and prohibit them from steering borrowers into higher-cost loans. It would establish a simple standard for all home loans: institutions must ensure that borrowers can repay the loans they are sold. For mortgage refinancing, the bill requires that all loans provide a net tangible benefit to the consumer.  Also, for the first time ever, it would make the secondary mortgage market responsible for complying with these standards when they buy loans and turn them into securities.  »

$250 Social Security Stimulus Payments to be Distributed Starting May 7

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, May 6, 2009, Congressman Joe Sestak (PA-07) announced that the $250 economic recovery payments for Social Security recipients, which are provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will begin to go out on May 7, with the goal of all these payments being sent out by the end of May. The Social Security Administration (SSA) will deliver the $250 payment by check to those recipients who receive their Social Security benefit by check and by direct deposit for those recipients who receive their Social Security benefit by direct deposit. Additionally, $250 economic recovery payments will also go to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients, Railroad Retirement recipients, and disabled veterans.  The payments are scheduled to begin going out to SSI recipients in mid-May, to Railroad Retirement recipients in late May, and to disabled veterans in June. No action is required for eligible recipients to receive the payment.  »

Congressman Sestak to Host Veterans Summit Featuring Chief of Staff of the Department of Veterans Affairs

MEDIA, PA — Congressman Joe Sestak (PA-07) has announced that one of the nation’s top officials dealing with Veterans affairs will attend the Seventh Congressional District Veterans Summit on Monday, May 11th, 2009 to address concerns of local Veterans and active service members, their families and their caregivers. John R. Gingrich, Chief of Staff of the Department of Veterans Affairs will participate in the panel discussions portion of the event, which will also feature Congressman Sestak and Admiral “T” McCreary, president of Military.com. Prior to joining the VA, Mr. Gingrich assisted current VA Secretary Eric Shinseki in efforts to transform the Army during the Secretary’s tenure as Chief of Staff of the Army. Local, state, and national Veterans Administration Representatives, Veterans Service Organizations, and other service providers will offer on-location assistance to Veterans, Members of the Armed Forces, and their families. The summit will take place at Ridley High School in Folsom, PA from 6 PM to 9 PM.  »

Recognizing the 61st Anniversary of Israel

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, May 4, 2009, Congressman Joe Sestak (PA-07) voted in support of H.Con.Res 111, a resolution recognizing the historic significance of the 61st anniversary of the re-establishment of the sovereign and independent state of Israel as a homeland for the Jewish people. The measure reaffirms the bonds of friendship and cooperation which have existed between the United States and Israel for the past 61 years, and commits to strengthening those bonds. The measure passed 394 – 0.   »
