A message from Sec. Nilsestuen
In the past two weeks, the "swine flu" issue has gone from nowhere near the stove, to the back burner, to the front burner and boiling furiously.

I use those quote marks because this is not swine flu. It's human flu. It's not an animal health problem. It's a human health problem.

This is a wholly new virus that contains bits of genetic material from influenza viruses of humans, birds, and swine -- influenza is notorious for mixing itself up that way to create new bugs. Until a Canadian herd contracted the H1N1 from a human, it had never been found in swine anywhere in the world.

So let's call this virus by its proper name: H1N1. Harder to say and not as catchy -- but more accurate.
