The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) is
charged with preparing the America's workers force for new and better jobs in
the 21st Century work force, and ensuring the adequacy of America's work
places. The Department enforces Federal statutes which cover a wide variety of
workplace activities to include protecting workers' wages, health, safety,
employment, and pension rights; promoting equal employment opportunity; and
administering job training, unemployment insurance, and workers' compensation
programs. The Department also collects, analyzes, and publishes labor and
economic statistics; helps develop international trade and economic policies
affecting American workers; promotes improved conditions for women in the work
place; and devises programs to provide veterans with training and employment
services.
We offer rewarding careers, career
development opportunities, and the chance to make important contributions in
serving the work force of tomorrow. In serving and protecting workers, our
career choices include Economist, Investigator (Pension), Wage & Hour
Compliance Specialist, Workers' Compensation Claims Examiner, Equal Employment
Opportunity Specialist, Workforce Development Specialist, Industrial Hygienist,
Accountant, Safety & Occupational Health Specialist, Attorney, and many
others.
The recruitment, hiring, and retention of
high quality, diverse employees in the Department are essential in performing
our critical mission. To further this purpose, we have established a dialogue
with the college career services community so it may better know our programs
and job opportunities.
We have prepared this "reader-friendly"
reference guide to summarize Federal and, specifically, DOL hiring programs and
career opportunities. In addition, it provides information on the Federal
application process to assist you in developing a strong application or resume
for a position in the Federal service. I hope the guidance provided is useful,
and encourages outstanding college graduates like you to join the team that is
working for the 21st Century Workforce!
