Wolves
are highly social animals and live in packs. In Yellowstone, the average pack
numbers 10 animals, but some are more than twice that size. The pack is a complex
social family, with leaders and followers, each having individual personalities.
The wolf is a major predator that had been missing from the park for decades
until they were reintroduced to the park in 1995. In a two-year period 31 wolves
were relocated to Yellowstone. As of December of 2002, 270 wolves living in
30 packs inhabit the greater Yellowstone area.
