Washington, Nov 30, 2006 - The Georgetown Charter Township Fire Department has received a $163,584 grant from the Department of Homeland Security for new safety equipment.

“Firefighters routinely risk their health and their very lives in their role as our nation’s first responders,” said U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland. “Helping to provide the tools that they need is an investment in their ability to safely protect lives and property in the community.”

The grant will fund the purchase of 40 new sets of personal protective firefighting pants and jackets, safety upgrades to its breathing equipment and a high-pressure air compressor to fill the breathing equipment.

“The well-being of our firefighters is always the number one priority when responding to emergencies,” Georgetown Township Fire Chief Dan Hamming said. “Improving their safety improves the effectiveness and efficiency with which they are able to manage fires and fire-related hazards.”
