Directions to Athens, EPA -- driving from the south (and avoiding Atlanta)

(it is recommend you get a map of Georgia -- here are some links -- http://www.milebymile.com/maps/Georgia_road_map.pdf Exit EPA Disclaimer and/or http://www.georgia-map.org/georgia-road-map.gif Exit EPA Disclaimer -- to follow the general layout of this route)

  • Take I-75 North
  • Take I-475 bypass around Macon
  • Then you will be merging back on I-75 North
  • Get off at the exit for Hwy 83 -- turn right toward Monticello--North and/or East -- it is about 3 exits after you merge off I-475
Take I-20 East to Augusta FOR ONLY ABOUT 1 MILE -- the very next exit should be Hwy 129/441 -- after exiting off I-20 to the right, turn left onto Hwy 441
  • Take Hwy 441 North -- there is a four lane bypass of downtown Madison -- look for signs and stay on the 441 bypass (avoid business 441; if you should end up on business 441 it is OK; just watch for signs for 441 north to Athens)
Hwy 441 has a bypass of Watkinsville (but you will be on it automatically when you come north from Bishop)
Just a few miles past Bishop, 441 becomes a 4-lane divided highway. (You will be on this for at least 5 miles probably more like 7 miles.)
After the highway becomes divided, at the 7th stoplight, turn right onto the loop 10 bypass around Athens. (The stoplight before that is White Oak Drive.)
  • The second exit off the loop 10 bypass is College Station Rd. (The first exit is Milledge Ave.)
  • After exiting to the right, turn right onto College Station Rd.
  • Go about 1 mile and EPA is on the right. (Over a bridge and then through another light -- EPA is on the right just up the hill a little from that light.)
  • There are two entrances -- the first entrance will lead you to the front of the building where you can park. You must go into the front of the building and register as a visitor. The guard will give you a pass and your host will be called to take you into the building. (If you should miss the first entrance, turn right into the second entrance and turn right again on the next road which will put you back in front of the building.)
