Research Project:
Recovery of Polymethoxylate Flavones from Orange Oil Residue
Location: Winter Haven, Florida
Project Number: 6621-41000-012-08
Project Type:
Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Mar 04, 2009
End Date: Mar 31, 2012
Objective:
Develop cost effective and food-safe methods for the recoveries of orange peel polymethoxylated flavones from citrus oil processing byproducts.
Approach:
Initial findings point to facile recovery of the bulk of polymethoxylated flavones from orange oil residues by ethanol extractions. The conditions for these recoveries will be optimized for purity and recovery efficiencies. Parameters involving temperature, solvent composition (food grade), length of storage, selective precipitations, recrystalization methods will be tested. Purity, percent recovery, and composition of recovered polymethoxylated flavone fractions and will be evaluated by thin layer chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy.
