Background

Van Dale Junkyard is located on 10 acres within a 31-acre parcel of land and until 1980 received a variety of materials that included scrap metal, appliances, automobiles, tires, batteries, along with several thousand drums of industrial waste. Many of the contaminants identified at the site are listed in Common Chemicals Found at Superfund Sites.

Cleanup at the site included collecting contaminated soils, separating waste from soil, disposing wastes off-site, constructing a cap over soils and wastes, and installing fencing and property restrictions. Ground water, surface water, and sediment monitoring is part of long-term operation and maintenance at the site.

Site Updates

February 2009

EPA completed a second five-year review at the Vandale Junkyard site to evaluate background information , cleanup requirements and effectiveness, and maintenance and monitoring efforts. EPA also looked at ways the cleanup could operate more efficiently. The review concluded that cleanup steps are managing immediate health threats and protecting human health and the environment. Long-term the cleanup will not be completed until contamination levels in the ground water are reduced by the natural breakdown of pollutants. EPA recommends finding the cause of increased contamination at some ground-water monitoring wells, producing an enforceable agreement and developing a plan to evaluate land use restrictions. The next scheduled review will be in 2013.
