Background

Tomah Fairgrounds is a 10-acre waste site that accepted both industrial and municipal waste from 1953 to 1959. After operations stopped, the area was covered and the site became part of the Tomah Fairgrounds. Ground water and soil was contaminated with volatile organic compounds and heavy metals. The cleanup plan for the site is monitoring ground water to make sure contamination naturally degrades and limiting land use with access restrictions.

2008 Update

EPA completed a second five-year review in September 2007. The review determined that cleanup at the site protects human health and the environment. EPA is requiring plans to investigate remaining waste at the site and evaluate controls for preventing exposure to that waste. The next five-year review will take place in 2012.
