Background
Ohio Cast Products manufactured iron auto parts. The company went bankrupt in 2004, and the location was abandoned in 2005. A fire destroyed the office portion of the plant in February 2008. While battling the blaze, the Canton Fire Department discovered numerous drums and containers on-site, many labeled with the words "flammable liquid." The city of Canton contacted Ohio EPA for assistance, and after a site visit Ohio EPA formally requested EPA's help in March 2008.
A May 2008 site assessment found "friable" asbestos in the building rubble. Friable is the most dangerous kind of asbestos and means it can easily crumble and release dangerous fibers into the air if disturbed. Other contaminants at the site include drums and tanks containing flammable and corrosive liquids. A dangerous industrial coolant called polychlorinated biphenyl or PCB was also found within the warehouse and in the surrounding soil due to leaking electrical transformers. There is evidence of trespassing on the site and attempted looting. In addition, a basement-like area holds containers storing unknown materials as well as fire debris.
