Vermiculite Processing Operations in Northeast Minneapolis

Background

Having cleaned up asbestos from the yards at more than 260 northeast Minneapolis homes, EPA Region 5 now wants to find out if air inside of these homes contains asbestos fibers from the former Western Mineral Products plant, also known as the Grace plant. Many Logan Park-area residents referred to this as Libby asbestos. EPA expects to test the air inside of 30-50 of these homes that had an outdoor asbestos cleanup. This assessment will begin on September 24, 2008, and will take about two weeks to complete. The tests will show if asbestos fibers are present, and if they are from the WMP plant, which operated at 1720 Madison St. N.E. from the late 1930s until the late 1980s.
