If your home was damaged by a hurricane, flood, or other emergency, you probably want to rebuild as soon as possible. The Federal Trade Commission says don't rush into an agreement with a contractor. Check references, get at least two bids in writing, and don't pay more than the minimum in advance. Most important, never sign an insurance check over to a contractor.
