Research Project:
Identification and Utilization of Exotic Germplasm to Improve Soybean Productivity
Location: Corn and Soybean Research
Project Number: 3607-21000-012-02
Project Type:
Reimbursable
Start Date: Apr 01, 2008
End Date: Mar 31, 2010
Objective:
Improvement of soybean for yield and stress resistance through incorporation of new genes from exotic germplasms. This grant fund will directly support the soybean CRIS objective #4. The Milestone: release germplasm by 2011.
Approach:
Current US soybean cultivars have a narrow genetic diversity. Future increase in productivity of the US soybeans depends on increasing the genetic diversity by introgression of new genes from exotic germplasm. We hope to map novel genes for increased seed yield from crosses between elite US cultivars and exotic germplasm sources. The newly identified yield genes will then be introgressed into US cultivars via marker assisted breeding.
