Research Project: Fine Mapping, Identification of Gene Candidates, and Commercialization of Yield Enhancing Alleles from a Japanese Germplasm Line

Location: Soybean and Nitrogen Fixation Research

Project Number: 6645-21220-012-13
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Mar 24, 2008
End Date: Sep 30, 2008

Objective:
The genetic base of soybean is sufficiently narrow to hamper breeding progress for seed yield. It is hypothesized that this problem can be solved by introducing exotic soy gerplasm into US breeding programs. The objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach by identifying `yield genes¿ in exotic soy type PI 416937 from Japan.

Approach:
Bulk segregate analysis was used to identify 2 putative yield QTL which trace to soy PI 416937. To validate this discovery, 1) near isogenic lines were developed for the putative QTL, 2) a new QTL population was developed, and 3) putative yield QTL were transferred in a factorial arrangement to an early-maturing midwestern genetic back ground. All these materials will be yield tested and mapped with SSR/SNP markers as appropriate to confirm and more finely map important yield QTL.
