Fire and Aviation
The Malheur Rappel Crew (MRC) is located in the heart of the Malheur
National Forest in John Day, Oregon. Our rappel base is located
at the airport in John Day at an elevation of 3700 feet. The base
is home to an Initial Attack Rappel Helicopter, a National Efficiency
Helicopter (large fire support), and a Single Engine Airtanker (SEAT).
Our crew size varies each year from 19 as a minimum to 24 depending
on funding and the hiring process. Generally six crewmembers are
dedicated to the National Efficiency Helicopter throughout the summer
with a crew rotation every 14 days or so. The remaining rappellers
continue their initial attack duties throughout the Pacific Northwest.
