Congressman Donnelly Announces $600,000 Grant to Clean up Contaminated Sites in Elkhart

Elkhart, IN -  Today, Congressman Joe Donnelly announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted the County of Elkhart $400,000 and the City of Elkhart $200,00 in funds to clean up environmentally hazardous sites, also known as brownfields. The funding is a result of The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“I was pleased to learn that Elkhart will receive funds to help them clean up brownfield sites around town,” Donnelly said. “Cleaning up these brownfield sites will create local jobs and economic opportunities while helping to improve the quality of life for those living around these sites.”

Elkhart County will receive a $200,000 hazardous substances assessment grant to update the county’s brownfields inventory and conduct about 20 site assessments. They will also receive a $200,000 grant to assess properties with potential petroleum contamination. In addition, the City of Elkhart will receive a $200,000 hazardous substances assessment grant to inventory brownfields and conduct at least 10 site assessments.

Donnelly notified City of Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore of the grants.

“I am extremely appreciative of Congressman Donnelly’s efforts to help us obtain funding that will help us create jobs and make our city a better place to live,” said Mayor Moore.
