DOSH Safety Training Recommences After Half Decade |

 Governor Felix P. Camacho today commended the Guam Department of Labor,
particularly the Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH),
after it was reported that all safety awareness classes have
recommenced after about five years. Six courses are being offered
by DOSH between July and September at no cost to employees of the
government of Guam or to agencies. The subject areas include
Slips, Trips and Fall Hazards; Office Ergonomics; Highway Safety; Fire
Protection; Walking/Working Services; and Workplace Violence.
"Good things continue to come out of the Department of Labor and its
initiative to enhance the safety and health working conditions of more
than 11,000 government employees is commended," Governor Camacho
said. "I feel at ease knowing that the men and women at Labor are
doing their part to look after the working conditions of our
employees. It should be noted that they are doing this with fewer
employees and less resources."
DOSH is under the auspices of the Guam Department of Labor and is
tasked with enforcing safety and anti-hazard regulations within the
government of Guam workplace. It is mandated by Public Law 19-19
to oversee government-wide safety and health enforcement in the
workplace; however, the office has not conducted training in half a
decade. Its Training Specialist/Inspector, John Roberts, is an
Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) - authorized
trainer who previously worked with OSHA's On-site program on Guam
before joining GDOL. Also credited for DOSH's resurgence is GDOL
Wage and Hour Administrator and Acting DOSH Administrator Roman Quinata
who is taking responsibility for the Division.
"The Department of Labor is committed to the Governor's vision for
efficient government operations and delivery of service," GDOL Director
Maria Connelley said. "One of the most important factors to these
ends is the confidence employees have in their workplace. We want
them to know that they're secure and that we are looking after their
safety and health."
The six classes for this fiscal quarter are all at capacity with 28
employees from various agencies per class, or 168 altogether.
DOSH is accepting applications for more safety awareness classes and
further in-depth training for upper-middle management supervisors for
the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2006. This is the Department of
Labor's next step in its revitalized government-wide safety outreach
initiative.
