Industrial Waste Air Model (IWAIR)

Industrial Waste Air Model (IWAIR)

Background Information

EPA developed IWAIR to assist facility managers and regulatory agency staff in evaluating inhalation risks. Workers and residents in the vicinity of a unit may be exposed to volatile chemicals from the unit in the air they breathe. Exposure to some of these chemicals at sufficient concentrations may cause a variety of cancer and noncancer health effects (such as developmental effects in a fetus or neurological effects in an adult). With a limited amount of site-specific information, IWAIR can estimate whether specific wastes or waste management practices may pose an unacceptable risk to human health.

IWAIR is an interactive computer program with three main components:

  1. An emission model to estimate release of constituents from waste management units (WMUs);
  2. A dispersion model to estimate fate and transport of constituents through the atmosphere and determine ambient air concentrations at specified receptor locations; and
  3. A risk model to calculate either the risk to exposed individuals or waste constituent concentrations that can be protectively managed in the unit.

The program requires only a limited amount of site-specific information, including facility location, WMU characteristics, waste characteristics, and receptor information.

Download Model Files and User's Guide

To install and run IWAIR, download the iwair.exe file below to your hard drive and double-click. You will be prompted for a directory to which the files should be extracted. Once complete, go to the directory you specified and double-click the setup.exe file.

iwair.exe (Executable ZIP file, 18MB)

(Estimated download times: 56k - 41min; Cable/ISDN/DSN: <2 min. Actual download time may vary depending on other factors including Internet connection quality, computer speed, and network traffic.) Note: Netscape users will be notified that they are about to download an Unknown File Type. When prompted, select "Save File..." to download IWAIR.exe into the designated location.

For a more in-depth discussion of inhalation risks, refer to Chapter 5 of the Guide.
