Award Number G09AC00063, Category 3: Fifty States Initiative

Arizona Geographic Information Council Strategic and Business Plan Project

This project will develop a strategic plan through a visioning process and a business plan for implementation of that vision. It will strengthen efforts for effective and inclusive statewide coordination. The process will enable the various Arizona organizations involved with geospatial data and activities to improve coordination efforts resulting in better decisions, products and services for the citizens of the State. Through a series of regional workshops, AGIC will establish priorities designed to improve statewide coordination and geospatial initiatives. The process will also provide an assessment of the business needs of all stakeholder communities, identification of partnership opportunities and a plan to establish an Arizona Geospatial Clearinghouse to meet the needs of the Arizona GIS community and enhance the development of the NSDI.

The purpose is to develop strategic and business plans which support the needs of the Arizona GIS community. This will facilitate the coordination of programs, policies, technologies and resources which enable coordination, collecting, documentation, discovery,
distribution, exchange and maintenance of geospatial data. The development of the strategic plan will be driven by needs identified by regional user groups, government agencies, state and local executives and Arizona GIS community practitioners.

The primary goals of the project will include:

  • Developing a Strategic Plan: the strategic plan will identify a vision for improved access to geospatial data, the organization required for future statewide coordination to meet state geospatial data and technology needs and support the NSDI.
  • Developing a Business Plan: the business plan will define how objectives will be achieved along with justification for doing them. The business plan will identify partnership opportunities to establish and maintain an Arizona Geospatial Clearinghouse.
  • Revising AGIC Executive Order (E.O. 2004-19) or establish AGIC in Legislation: update and define roles and responsibilities to strengthen statewide geospatial coordination which improves access to geospatial data in Arizona.
  • Adopting State Geospatial Policies: to establish principles, responsibilities, and requirements for acquiring and managing geospatial data used by state and local agencies of Arizona. This will include developing options for changing or mitigating statutes which currently constrain the sharing of geospatial data.
