Washington, Apr 22 - Muskegon Public Schools has received a grant of nearly $400,000 from the Department of Education to support counseling programs in targeted elementary schools.

"Schools that work with parents to address all of the students’ needs helps to create better opportunities for success in their academic endeavors," said U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland. "Offering quality school counseling helps to improve the scholastic environment and in turn improve academic achievement."

Under the program, schools will establish or expand counseling programs through hiring qualified school counselors, school social workers, school psychologists, or child and adolescent psychiatrists with a goal of expanding the range, availability, quantity and quality of counseling services available.

Counseling services will use a developmental, prevention approach, and will be designed and implemented with the involvement of parents of the participating students.

"Other than services for special needs children, we really don’t have counseling programs at the elementary level," said Linda Wierenga, executive director of elementary education. "We will now have the ability to address students with common needs, as well as work with students in one-on-one sessions for unique situations."
