2002 Award Winners

In FY 2002, EPA developed a new “peer” awards program to recognize and encourage energy and water conservation among its facility managers and building design and construction personnel. The following six awards, collectively known as the “Btu Buster Awards,” were presented at EPA's Buildings and Facilities conference in Gulf Breeze, Florida, in February 2003.
- The Btu Buster of the Year Award, FY 2002, was given to Rick Dreisch of the Fort Meade, Maryland, Environmental Science Center for his leadership on a recommissioning project that reduced energy use on a total Btu basis at the laboratory by more than 12 percent and cut utility costs by more than $100,000 annually.
- The Leading Edge Award 2002 went to Frank Price of EPA's Ada, Oklahoma, Office of Research and Development Laboratory for his efforts on Ada's Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC), which will result in a 56 percent reduction of energy use.
- A Leading Edge Award 2001 was given to Steve Dorer of EPA's Ann Arbor, Michigan, Office of Air and Radiation Laboratory for his work on Ann Arbor's ESPC that cut Ann Arbor's energy costs by more than 50 percent and water use by 60 percent.
- The Energy Partner Award 2002 (Field Staff) was presented to Rich Koch and Rhonda Hampton of EPA's Region 5 in Cincinnati for their work on Cincinnati facilities' green power purchase and energy master plan, respectively. The Cincinnati green power purchase was EPA's largest green power purchase at the time the awards were given.
- Another Energy Partner Award 2002 was given to Stephanie James of Headquarters for her work on the Fort Meade, Maryland, recommissioning and Cincinnati, Ohio, energy master plan projects.
