Washington, May 11, 2007 - Three local colleges will receive more than $1 million from the Department of Education for their Upward Bound programs.

“Upward Bound programs in West Michigan help to improve the skills of young adults as they work to pursue a higher education,” said U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland. “The federal funding is great news for students in need of extra assistance to meet their educational goals.”

Upward Bound is designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. It provides support to participants in preparing for entering postsecondary education. It targets low-income students who are often first in their families to attend college.

The grants were awarded as follows:

  • Grand Valley State University, Allendale: $400,028
  • Hope College, Holland: $367,108
  • Muskegon Community College, Muskegon: $250,000

“The grants will have a profound impact in serving the lives of students in need across West Michigan,” said Arnie Smith-Alexander, GVSU Upward Bound Director. “I am pleased the Department of Education continues to recognize the effectiveness of our program and others across the area.”
