Washington, Dec 12, 2007 - Crystal Township in Oceana County has received a $78,000 loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development program to cover the local match of a $168,000 fire pumper/tanker.

“Protecting rural communities presents a unique challenge because of the wide distribution of homes throughout the township,” said U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland. “Acquiring the new vehicle will better enable the department to respond to emergencies, especially with the limited number of sources from which it can draw water.”

The Community Facility Direct Loan will be used to assist in the purchase of the 2,000-gallon pumper/tanker truck that will replace a 1983 unit. The USDA estimates that it will benefit 832 township residents.

“The federal loan is a much-needed shot in the arm for a rural township with limited revenue like ours,” Township Supervisor Connelly Bowling said. “It will improve our fire protection resources and enable us to more effectively serve our rural township residents.”

The township received a $90,000 grant from the USDA in September toward the purchase of the truck.
