Washington, May 8 - The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded Lake County $400,000 and Muskegon County $200,000 for brownfields assessments.

"Identifying abandoned or contaminated sites for remediation helps economic development and improves the quality of the environment," said U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland. "Brownfields redevelopment can restore problematic property into community assets that enhance the local quality of life."

The grants will fund site assessment and planning for eventual cleanup. Brownfields are sites where expansion, redevelopment or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants.

"The brownfields assessment will continue to help Muskegon redevelop and transform itself into a more vibrant city," Muskegon City Manager Bryon Mazade said. "It will help to showcase the city’s attributes and perhaps most importantly provide new jobs and investment."

"The EPA grant will enable us to conduct more assessments around the county and determine the areas that need attention," said Tony Gagliardo, Lake County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority chairman. "It is part of our effort to create incentives for business investment and prepare for future growth in the county."
