Washington, Jan 26 - U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland, today responded to President Barack Obama ordering the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to review whether California and 14 other states can implement their own tailpipe emissions regulations.

“Allowing California to implement its own tailpipe emissions standards could open the door to all 50 states implementing their own standards,” Hoekstra said. “Requiring manufacturers to build a fleet of cars that meet a set of 50 different emissions and fuel economy regulations could potentially cripple the industry.”

Hoekstra last week joined several members of Congress in signing an Amicus Brief in the case State of California v EPA. The brief supports the EPA’s decision to deny California a waiver that would have allowed it to implement its own standards, ignoring the Energy Independence and Security Act passed by Congress in 2007. It established a single national fuel economy standard over a patchwork of state regulations.

“We all want a cleaner environment and more fuel efficient vehicles, but not at the expense of eliminating jobs and further burdening a major U.S. industry,” Hoekstra said. “The auto industry needs certainty and stability in the marketplace as it moves forward, especially as the United States faces a major economic crisis.”
