Lesson Plans & Teacher Guides

Tumacácori currently offers four different teachers guides.

Encounters, the Parks historical guide, sequentially follows Arizona history from Native Americans through statehood. Lessons are unique to the area known as the Pimería Alta (Southern Arizona and Sonora, Mexico). Targeted for 4th grade, the guide is appropriate through 8th grade and the contents are applicable through high school.

Life Along the Santa Cruz River is our guide for primary grades, 1st through 3rd. Lessons  introduce students to the O'odham, Apache and Spanish cultures, then explores river-related themes including trees, wildlife and littering.

The 4th through 8th grade The Santa Cruz River, Its People and Environment examines the people, cultures and natural history of the area. Students will learn about how people relied on the natural resources and how their lifestyles and actions may have effected the environments.  Stating with Native American perspectives, the lessons discuss natural history, cultural and environmental themes and issues through present times.

Birds, People and the Santa Cruz River is appropriate for 7th grade through high school. Students will explore pre-historic, nature-based artwork, learn about and compare bird characteristics, and identify local bird species.  They will then use knowledge gained to debate local environmental issues related to the river. Lessons, although specific to the Santa Cruz, can be easily be modified for most environments.
