Rapid Refresh

Through the Rapid Refresh, mapping zones associated with eleven western states were updated by June 2008 (see figure at right). Mapping zones were grouped by geographic areas (Southwest, Pacific Southwest, Pacific Northwest, Northern Rocky Mountains, Central Rocky Mountains, and the Great Basin) to facilitate data gathering, processing, and review.

RefreshREFRESH Products

The Refresh approach to updating LANDFIRE layers will focus on landscape changes to vegetation such as wildland fire, fuel and vegetation treatments, mortality from insects and disease, storm damage, invasive plants, and other natural or anthropogenic events. The Refresh project will update existing layers to reflect more current conditions. LANDFIRE is a national project, and LANDFIRE Refresh began work in the southeastern United States. See map at right which lists the geographic area mapping order for the nation. For additional information on LANDFIRE Refresh and a list of data products and descriptions, click here.

Refresh Data Call

The Refresh project is subject to a production schedule that sequences the input of contributions by geographic regions, as noted in the table below. The project data administrator will accept contributed data as soon as they are available. However, data must be submitted within the timeframes listed below to contribute to the Refresh update. Those data that are submitted after these dates will become part of a national data base that will be used in subsequent updates and also be available for other efforts.

Processing Unit Data Submission Period
SoutheastOctober 2008 – January 2009
Pacific NorthwestOctober 2008 – March 2009
Pacific Southwest January – June 2009
Southwest January – September 2009
North Central April – December 2009
South Central April – December 2009

Refresh Product Delivery Schedule

The Refresh project is estimated to span 24 months. The project involves over 500 unique tasks to deliver updated LANDFIRE data layers. Refresh is highly dependent upon the contributions of field data in the form of change data polygons and other information regarding landscape conditions (see Refresh Data Call section above). The schedule of estimated data product delivery is provided in the table below and is subject to a range of factors that may result in possible advances or delays in product delivery dates.

Processing Unit Estimated Data Delivery
SoutheastJune 2009
Pacific NorthwestOctober 2009
Pacific SouthwestDecember 2009
SouthwestFebruary 2010
North Central April 2010
South Central May 2010
Northeast July 2010
Alaska & Hawaii September 2010
