- Screen Reading: "This tape is sponsored by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. It is provided for your free and unrestricted use."
- Screen Reading: "The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) tested 32 gun locks - 16 trigger locks and 16 cable locks - and found that all but two models can be opened without a key."
- Screen Reading: "CPSC Lab Technicians; James Hyatt voice-only demonstrations; Richard
McCallion on-camera demonstrations"
- Screen Reading: "Test: Trigger lock dropped onto an Anvil"
- (View of man in lab coat with trigger locks in his hands.) "These are two examples of typical trigger locks. This particular lock is a key lock. This is a combination lock. The way they work is there's a post with teeth. These teeth engage a tooth rack. They lock by pressing them together. This is placed behind the trigger on the gun and prevents you from pulling the trigger."
- (View of different man in lab coat showing the following demonstration) "We attached the firearm to the clamp, lift up approximately two feet, and drop the gun lock onto the steel anvil." (View of the gun falling two feet, landing on the anvil) "After the impact, it opened up the lock enough that you can pry it open with minimal or no effort." (View of man pulling apart gun lock).
- Screen Reading "Test: Trigger lock struck with a hammer."
- (View of man in lab coat with hammer and gun.) "When we strike these locks with a
hammer, (he hits the lock 4 times), a few short blows and it knocks the lock
right off." (View of the lock falling off of the gun.)
- Screen Reading: "Test: Trigger lock opened with a screwdriver."
- (View of man with gun in one hand and a screwdriver in the other hand.) "We can use a screwdriver to pry this lock right off." (View of man inserting screw driver between the lock and gun and loosening the locks hold onto the gun.)
- Screen Reading: "Test: Trigger lock opened with pliers and a paper clip."
- (View of man with gun lock in one hand and pliers in the other hand.)
"There are devices on the market that use a special screw that can be opened
using simple household tools and loosened and opened." (Man pries open gun
lock with the pliers).
- (View of man with gun lock in one hand and a paper clip in the other hand.
Man uses the paper clip to pry open the gun lock by inserting the paper clip
end into the holes of the gun lock.)
- Screen Reading: "Test: Gun fired with the trigger lock attached."
- (View of man with gun in hand with trigger lock not placed onto the gun
properly.) "The trigger lock not secured properly, you can still get your
finger behind there and fire the gun." (The gun clicks when the trigger is
pulled.)
- (View of man with another gun and trigger lock.) "With this trigger lock,
the gun can still be fire by pulling back." (View of man pulling the
trigger.)
- Screen Reading: "Test: Cable locks dropped onto the ground."
- (View of man with cable lock in his hand.) "This is a typical cable lock.
These are used by passing a cable through the firearm, latching the cable to
the lock which prevents you from loading the magazine and pulling the
trigger and operating the weapon in a normal manner." (The man inserts the
black cable through the bottom of the gun and out the top and secures it
into a lock.)
- (View of man standing with a gun and cable lock.) "Simple drop can cause the
lock to open. (Man drops gun on concrete flooring and the cable lock comes
unlocked.)
- Screen Reading: "Test: Cable lock split with cable cutters."
- (View of man with gun and cable lock in his hand.) "With just a regular
pair of cable cutters, we can cut this lock and fire the gun." (Man cuts the
cable and removes the cable and fires the gun.)
- Screen Reading: "Test: Cable lock struck against an anvil."
- (View of man with a cable lock in his hand.) "A simple impact can open this
type of lock." (Man strikes the cable lock on the top of a metal anvil. The
lock breaks open.)
- (View of man with another cable lock in his hand.) "With a simple impact, we
can cause this type of lock to open." (Man strikes the cable lock on the top
of a metal anvil. The lock breaks open.)
- Screen Reading: "The gun locks were distributed nationwide by NSSF as part
of its Project Home Safe campaign for safe firearm storage. Law enforcement
agencies distributed the gun locks free of charge from September 1999
through October 2000."
- Screen Reading: "The replacement lock has an improved locking mechanism and
a thicker-steel braided cable. With the announcement of this replacement
lock program, NFFS is resuming Project Home Safe."
- Screen Reading: "B-roll of new replacement lock."
- (View of cable lock for gun with words "Project Home Safe" written on it.)
- Screen Reading: "CPSC has sent its results to gun lock manufacturers and is
working with the industry to develop safety standards for gun locks."
