Ocean Color

SCIENCE FOCUS

Ocean color data has provided us with remarkable insight into the biological dynamics of the world's oceans. The Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) was a pioneering mission, "proving the concept" of ocean color remote sensing. The Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) demonstrated that the collection of high quality ocean color data over the entire globe could be accomplished. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) provides data with high spectral quality and resolution over the world's oceans, which will further enhance our knowledge.

The primary role of the GES DISC ocean color data system has been to provide these data to oceanographic researchers. In addition to that role, several informational resources have been created to provide explanations about what the data means, the various ways it can be used, and what scientists can learn about the oceans and the environment from analysis of the data.

The resources listed on this page have been created for the purpose of explanation and illumination. We hope that some of these articles also capture a sense of the excitement and discovery that scientists relish as they conduct their scientific endeavors.

Ocean Color Science Focus!

Ocean Color Science Focus! is basScience Focused primarily on the SeaWiFS and MODIS missions. Origjnally inspired by a remarkable image of a dust storm in China that crossed the Pacific Ocean, Ocean Color Science Focus! has discussed a wide variety of phenomena observed by these sensors.

CZCS Classic Scenes

The CZCS was a true pioneer, proving that what it was designed to do was possible, and then providing almost eight years of unprecedented ocean observations. CZCS Classic Scenes presents some of the best and beautiful images captured by this mission, and discusses the science behind them.

Ocean Color From Space - CZCS

Ocean Color from Space is one of the first presentations of CZCS observations and images with brief discussion of their significance. It provides a historical view of the mission.

Education

The Educational Resources Web page is a compendium of links useful to scientists, educatiors, and the general public related to ocean color and oceanographic remote sensing.
