Yuma Area Office

About Us

The Yuma Area Office delivers water to U.S. customers, manages groundwater, delivers water to Mexico, and engages in environmental enhancement, protection, and mitigation. Its mission is to protect and enhance the Colorado River's natural and man-made resources while satisfying the water needs of National and International customers. The Yuma Area Office's customers include California and Arizona irrigation districts and Tribes; Yuma area irrigation districts, farmers, residents, and Tribes; the International Boundary and Water Commission; and State, Tribe, and Federal Fish and Wildlife Agencies.

Water Delivery

  • Deliver over 8 million acre-feet of water annually to three states and Mexico
  • Maintain over 30 water, land, and power contracts for several Federal projects
  • Operate dredges and land-based heavy equipment to maintain the Colorado River channel for navigation, flood control, and water delivery operations
  • Provide water to 1/2 million people and 1.2 million acres of agriculture

  • Meet international treaty obligations with Mexico by operating and maintaining the world’s largest reverse osmosis desalting plant and an international canal system
  • Construct, operate, and maintain U.S. pumps, wells, drains, and canals
  • Operate the Water Quality Improvement Center to provide training, testing, and research in desalting technology
  • Provide water quality experts internationally

  • Manage 285,000 acres of Federal land
  • Oversight of 4 Federal dams and reservoirs and the facilities within 7 Federal projects (canals, bridges, pumping plants, wells, dams, etc.)
  • Operate and maintain 30 miles of railroad track, 5 miles of public highway, 142 miles of power lines, 25 quarries, 51 stockpile sites, 84 wells, and 90 miles of canal

  • Maintain major mitigation backwaters
  • Construct Colorado River habitat enhancement features by coordinating and cost sharing with state and local entities

  • Provide outreach programs to schools and other organizations on canal and water safety, the environment, and water conservation programs
  • Provide assistance to Native American Tribes

  • Administer the only management and operations contract in Reclamation
