Geology

Horseshoe Dam is located in a narrow constriction of the Verde River.  The valley walls are relatively steep, rising from river level at approximately 45 degrees.  Rock at the dam and appurtenances consist of alternating beds of volcanics which include basalt, tuff, ash and tuffaceous conglomerate.  The beds dip on the order of 20 to 30 degrees to the southwest.  Alluvium within the valley at the site had a maximum depth of 50 feet.  Portions of the volcanic beds are relatively highly jointed.  The joints are generally tight; however, in some areas, especially at the right abutment, the joints were open to nominal depths.
