Research Project: Identifying Resistance to Ug99 in Wheat and Barley, and Phenotyping Mapping Populations

Location: Cereal Disease Laboratory

Project Number: 3640-21220-020-14
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 26, 2008
End Date: Sep 30, 2011

Objective:
Identifying sources of resistance to stem rust in barley and wheat, investigating genetics of resistance, and helping breeding programs to incorporate resistance into breeding germplasm.

Approach:
Wheat and barley germplasm and advanced breeding lines will be evaluated and characterized for stem rust reaction in greenhouse tests. Mapping populations will be phenotyped using appropriate stem rust races. Crosses will be made to develop mapping populations when novel sources of resistance are identified.
