Research Project:
Improving Flooding Tolerance of Soybean by Genetic Transformation
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Project Number: 3604-13000-008-03
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 12, 2007
End Date: Aug 30, 2010
Objective:
The broad objective of this cooperative research project is to conduct field and laboratory research to improve flooding tolerance of soybean. This project addresses objective 3 of the current CRIS: Develop flooding-tolerant soybean cultivars that are better adapted to the wet soil conditions associated with the use of drainage water management systems (DWMS) in the Midwest U.S. The objectives of the specific cooperative agreement link directly one-to-one with the milestones and deliverables shown on page 35 of the CRIS Project Plan under sub-objectives 3a and 3b.
Approach:
Two approaches will be used to improve flooding tolerance of soybean:
1. Field testing a recombinant inbred population to map the quantitative trait loci (QTL) of flooding tolerance.
2. Developing transgenic soybeans containing transgenes known to improve the tolerance of other plant species to low oxygen and no oxygen stress associated with flooding.
