Research Project: Study of Malting Quality of New Barley Selections

Location: Cereal Crops Research

Project Number: 3655-43440-004-01
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Aug 17, 2004
End Date: Jun 30, 2009

Objective:
The primary objective of this project is to provice data on various parameters important to malting quality for experimental malting barley lines under selection and development in state and federal breeding programs to aid in development of superior malting barley varieties.

Approach:
We will malt, analyze and report on samples submitted by barley breeders and other researchers from the 2004 crop year, as we have done in previous years. Routine analyses include barley and malt moisture, nitrogen, and kernel count, barley plumpness and Agtron color, fine grind extract, wort soluble progran, soluble/total, beta-glucan, wort color and clarity, diastatic power and alpha-amylase levels. In addition, for regional nurseries and AMBA pilot scale submissions, we also measure pH, viscosity, coarse grind extract, turbidity, FAN, and friability.
