In 1904, the City of Waverly Iowa invested $13,500 to establish Waverly Light and Power, a municipally owned electric utility that now serves more than 4,600 customers in and around Waverly. Managed by a local trusteeship, Waverly Light and Power is a local, regional and national leader in reliability and renewable energy.
During the 1980’s, Waverly’s energy demand increased at a rate of almost double the national average. Committed to reliability, Waverly Light and Power sought a solution. Following an independent study, it was determined that wind was a viable resource in Iowa.
In 1993, Waverly Light and Power became the fi rst public power system in the Midwest to own and operate wind generation, positioning the utility as a national leader in renewable energy. Waverly Light and Power sets a community example in energy effi ciency, from the “Tree’s Forever” tree-planting initiative and school outreach programs to the “House of Green” and “Good Cents” energy effi ciency programs. The Utility also empowers customers to help build green power and offset their use of carbon emissions through the Iowa Energy Tag program.
Waverly Light and Power is the recipient of numerous state and national awards, including the Reliable Public Power Award, the Iowa Energy Leadership Award, and multiple Energy Innovator Awards.
