The Coeur d'Alene Tribe, North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and US Environmental Protection Agency GOS Integration Project

Award Number G09AC00105, Category 2: Behind the Portal - Use of GOS Map and Data Services

This project will provide for the development of a suite of reusable components that will enable EPA, NCDENR and the Coeur d’Alene tribe to integrate Geospatial One-Stop (GOS) search capabilities into their websites, web applications, or other client tools. The services developed for this project will access the GOS catalog using the Catalog Service for the Web (CSW) interface and will support retrieval of metadata records that adhere to both the FGDC Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM) or the International Organization for Standards (ISO) 19115/19139. The application will also support interfacing with other catalogs if desired, as long as they support CSW or Z39.50. Users will have the ability to specify input parameters such as keywords, data content type, or use a bounding box to specify geographic extent. Users will have the ability to specify how output should be presented. A cornerstone of this effort is deployment of a single suite of services that will interface with varying front end tools through the use of a reusable application programming interface (API). This will allow a variety of users to customize their GOS experience and leverage content through client applications which best fit their business needs. The API will support all front end requests for facilitating access to GOS resources.

The following components are currently envisioned as part of this effort:

  • Reusable search API
  • Interfaces with the GOS CSW interface (and other catalogs if desired)
  • Supports retrieval of both ISO 19115/19139 and FGDC CSDGM metadata records
  • Allows users to specify input and output parameters
  • Allows visualization within front end client tools
  • Development of an automated GeoRSS feed that can support subscriptions
  • Documentation and training materials for using components
  • All software developed for this project will be modular and subsequently published as open-source so that it may be modified and re-deployed by other NSDI users and providers
